Fear vs. Freedom: Scaling the Drakensberg Mountains

8 Days Backpacking in the Drakensberg | An Unforgettable Photography Adventure with Alex Nail

Join me on an incredible 8-day backpacking expedition with Alex Nail Photography through the breathtaking Drakensberg Mountains. This remote and rugged landscape, on the border of South Africa and the high-altitude kingdom of Lesotho, is a paradise for photographers seeking dramatic light, towering cliffs, and vast open spaces. Despite rain every day, the weather followed a predictable pattern—clouds and storms rolling in by afternoon, only to clear at sunrise, delivering spectacular golden light over the escarpment each morning. We witnessed some of the most awe-inspiring views I’ve ever photographed from our wild camps on the edge of towering cliffs. One of the most memorable aspects of the trip was encountering the Basotho shepherds who live and work on the plateau. These hardy men, wrapped in traditional wool blankets, tend their livestock in some of the harshest conditions, walking miles across the highlands in solitude. Their presence added a profound human connection to the vast and dramatic landscapes we were capturing. This was the adventure of a lifetime—challenging, rewarding, and filled with unforgettable moments. Watch as we navigated the unpredictable weather, trekked across stunning mountain terrain, and chased the ever-changing light in one of Africa’s most spectacular wilderness areas.
